Syllabus
Theory
Basic laws of Electrical engineering-Ohm’s Law, Kirchhoff’s Law, Important terms – Current, Voltage, Power, Horse Power. Circuits – series and parallel circuit. Equipments used for measuring electrical parameters – volt-meter, ammeter, watt-meter, multi-meter, clamp-meter, megger. Basics of house wiring-types of conduit wiring, layout and wiring diagrams for domestic installations, sub circuits, specification of wires and cables, determination of size of wires in simple circuits, functions and working of MCBs and ELCBs. Types of fuses, different types of wiring accessories used in domestic installation .Earthing-necessity of earthing, types of earthing, materials used for earthing.
Types of lamps-tube lights, parts, working principle, circuit diagrams, discussion of possible faults and fault rectification. Construction, working principle, circuit diagrams, possible faults and fault rectification of different home appliances including Electric iron, Water heater, Electric bell, fans etc.
Practicals
1. Electrical parameter measurements using volt meter, ammeter, Wattmeter and multimeter.
2. Wiring circuits
a. identify ,use and maintain wireman’s tools
b. identify, dismantle, sketch and assemble different electrical accessories
c. prepare termination –cable termination and connection
d. prepare simple twist joints
e. prepare married joint in stranded conductors
f. prepare TEE joint in stranded conductors
g. prepare T.W. block/board for wiring
h. prepare and mark the wiring layout for a bedroom of a house with 6 points and estimate the accessories required
i. one lamp controlled by one switch
j. Plug controlled by a switch
k. two lamps controlled by two switches
l. staircase wiring
m. go down wiring
n. railway signal wiring
o. House wiring including main switch, distribution board, ELCB and MCB.
p. Tunnel Wiring
q. Hospital Wiring
3. Ceiling fan wiring, study the common faults and faults rectification
4. Removing and refitting of iron box and identify the common faults and faults rectification.
5. Repair and service a table fan
6. Replace the heating element in a kettle and test
7. Assemble and install a fluorescent lamp
8. Assemble and connect a fluorescent lamp with accessories and install a twin tube.
9. Starting of induction motor and DC motor
