The Department of Information Technology at Government Engineering College, Barton hill was established in the academic year 1999, offering a four year B.Tech. course in Information Technology. M.Tech. Course in Information Technology with specialization in Network Engineering commenced from the academic year 2011-2012.
All the students for B.Tech course are allotted from among the top ranked students of Kerala Engineering Entrance Examination. Many of the students bagged top ranks in the Kerala University. Most of the students passed out from the department are working in top ranked international and multinational companies. Lots of students from the department got selection for PG programmes in Indian Institute of Technologies and top ranked foreign universities.
The department takes special efforts to impart technical knowledge to the students. The students are focused with the use of conceptual understanding of core domain area in Computing as well as enhanced programming skills disseminating their analytical abilities. The faculties of our department are well qualified and have rich knowledge in their subjects. Many of the faculty members obtained higher qualifications from Indian Institute of Technologies and Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore.

M.Tech Course in Network Engineering commenced from the academic year 2011-2012.
The Department of Information Technology has a video conferencing facility, a central server room and Seven laboratories.The department has the necessary software and hardware infrastructure for the conduct of all the 10 laboratory/practical subjects in the B.Tech and M.Tech curriculum. All the student projects are done in-house. Each laboratory room has networked printers over Ethernet LAN. Although the emphasis is on the use of Linux and open source software, other popular proprietary software platforms are also supported. In addition,the department provides the necessary technical support for the smooth functioning of the campus-wide network in the college. A 100Mbps internet connection via firewall provided to the entire campus through fibre optic links. Also have 10 Mbps NMEICT connection and 10 Mbps Leased line connections.
The IT department is managing the entire campus network including Administrative office, Library, and other departments and sections in the campus. More over the computer laboratories are under the IT department are also functioning as the option facilitation centre during the time of the Centralized Allotment process (CAP) of the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations. In additions to these, Biometric Punching, WIFI management, Website management, DDFS, Conducting Online Exams/Training programmes for CGPU,Govt.(ASAP/NASSCOM) and other organizations (Online banking recruitments) etc. are handled by the IT Department.
The video conferencing facility was officially inaugurated by Sri. K. Muraleedharan, MLA on 27th March 2015.This room is equipped with LifeSize VC module,LED TV sets,LCD projectors ,Audio Mixers, Microphones and Speakers.
The VC room facilitate Direct Video conferencing with 3 centers at a time with seating capacity 72 and IP based dedicated VC units
(a) Server Room: This room has 6 blade servers and 4 rack servers. The OSplatforms provided are CentOS, Red hat, Ubuntu and Windows 2008 Server. Different servers are set apart for managing various activities. For Networking/Security purpose there are central firewall Fortigate 200B,Forti Analyser 100C,CISCO Router- Layer 3,SAN – HD F850-CBSS 110P Hitachi Unified storage 110 Base, controller Box – SFF 24X24 with accessories- 20 TB ,Ruckus Zone Director-Wi-Fi Network, Cisco Managed switches-24 port 4 SFT.
(b) Web Application Laboratory: This lab has 72 Windows based desktops with internet connectivity. This lab is also used for conducting online examinations.
(c) Programming Laboratory:This lab has 68 dual boot desktops with internet connectivity.
(d)Internet Laboratory:This lab runs on thin-client machines running under EnterpriseLinux as wellas desktops running under Windows. 36terminals areprovided forInternetconnectivityand running various software labsinthecurriculum.
(e)Network Laboratory:This lab has 8 Cisco routers,switches,high- speed modems and 36 dual-boot desktop machines. A wireless LAN laboratory with wireless access points/routers,wireless site survey kit and other equipmentset up here.
(f)Software Testing Laboratory: This lab has 15 desktops with Windows 8 Professional, Intel Core i5 Processors with internet connectivity. The Functional Testing software (QTP) hasbeenset uphere.
(g)Network security Laboratory: This lab has 19 desktops with Windows 8 Professional, Intel Core i5 Processors with internet connectivity. Six number ofCisco Router 1901 series and six numbers of Cisco catalyst 1960 Switch 48 Ethernet 10/100 ports with 2 10/100/1000TX
